Enhanced Drug Testing for Commercial Drivers Coming This Year

Federal guidelines are expected to be published this year allowing motor carriers to conduct hair-follicle drug test on drivers.  Hair testing has a longer detection window and provides a 90 day drug use history.   However, due to the slow growth of hair, it can not detect very recent drug use, and therefore cannot be used for reasonable suspicion or post accident drug testing.  Urine drug testing which has a 2-3 day detection period for drug use will still be needed in cases when recent drug use is in question.
